Y’all, I am so excited about this year! And, I think many of you are as well … so many of you have shared about our January prayer calendar on Facebook. THANK YOU! Our theme is CONNECTING THROUGH THE WORD and I can’t wait to see what is going to happen as we spend this month praying WITH our girls.
Connecting through the Word with Your Girl
We’ll be spending the first three months of this year talking about CONNECTION. This month, obviously, we’re focusing on how we can connect with our daughters through Scripture. Why is it important that we use the Bible as we seek to build a relationship with our girls?
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.
2 Timothy 3:16
This verse may be familiar to you. But as we look at it today, I want us to examine each of the four reasons Paul says Scripture is profitable or valuable in light of our desire to connect with our daughters.
We spend a great deal of time teaching our children. From teaching them how to hold a spoon to teaching them how to drive a car, so much of parenting is about instructing our daughters in the skills they will need to navigate life. But it isn’t enough for us to teach them how to tie their shoes or to make their beds, we also have a responsibility to instruct them in the Bible and how God expects us to live in light of our relationship with Him.
Simple things like reminding our daughters they are fearfully and wonderfully made as we show them Psalm 139:14 become opportunities to share God’s Word and connect with our girls’ hearts as we point them to eternal truths.
This one may not be as much fun but it’s just as important. The Bible is useful for reproof which means “admonishment” or “reprimand.” While none of us enjoy disciplining our daughters, it is part of the mom job. One of the ways we’ve been intentional about using Scripture for reproof with our daughter is to use “Bible words” like sin as we deal with issues needing discipline. God offers us specific guidelines for being obedient to Him. We give our daughters a great gift when we use God’s Word as the foundation for disciplining them.
Using Bible words helps our daughters understand the weight of their actions in light of the Word. For example, when disciplining our daughters about lying, we can point them to verses like Proverbs 14:5 which says, “A faithful witness does not lie, but a false witness breathes out lies.”
Sometimes I forget there is a difference between reproof and correction. But it’s an important distinction for us as we learn to connect with our daughters through the Word. While reproof is a term implying discipline, correction is focused more on making adjustments. When we use Scripture to correct our daughters, we are helping them understand ideas, behaviors, and actions they haven’t fully grasped. Sometimes our girls may do the right thing for the wrong reason. This is a great example of a situation when we use the Bible for correction.
“All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirit” Proverbs 16:2. This is a verse we have used to help Casiday understand that God can see our motives and it is important for our hearts and actions to align with God’s Word.
For Training in Righteousness
I love this one! As we guide our girls into a deeper and maturing relationship with the Lord, Scripture is our most valuable tool. The Bible is replete with instructions for living a life that pleases the Lord and we give our girls a powerful gift when we teach them to use it as their source of direction. It’s easy for our girls to get sucked into competition and comparison and lose their focus. We need to be diligent about reminding them the standard is Jesus and not each other.
My life verse is Psalm 19:14, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to You, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” We can point our daughters to verses like this one to help them remember the goal is to live a life that pleases the Lord.
Those are four important reasons why it is important for us to be connecting through the Word with our girls. In our ever-changing world, our girls need us to point them to the never-changing Word as the standard.
A Prayer for Wisdom
Lord, we want to raise daughters who are desperate to live for You. We know that won’t happen by accident and we want to be purposeful and proactive as we point them to You. Help us be vigilant about connecting through the Word with our girls. Give us insight as we teach, reprove, correct, and train them. We believe Your promise of generous wisdom to all who ask and se we are asking, Lord, for great wisdom in this area. Thank You for Your Word, for our girls, and for the opportunity to connect with them through Scripture. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To help us all with connecting through the Word with our girls, I thought we might memorize that verse from 2 Timothy. In fact, I made a little printable to help us. You can download yours by clicking on the link below the image.
