If we were to sit down together for coffee and get past all the small talk to the core of what we’re really dealing with right now, I’d guess almost all of us would end up sharing some sort of fear or struggle we have or feel about raising our daughters. I’d probably end up crying and sharing some sort of huge parenting fail I’d experienced and we’d probably also laugh about some sort of misadventure we’d experienced as we parent our daughters. But here’s what else I suspect:
If we peeled back all the layers of our fears, doubts, and worries, the bottom line for almost all of us would be a desire to connect with our daughters’ hearts.
When we align our hearts with the Word, we will experience more unity in our relationships with our daughters. And, moms, can we all just be really honest for a minute and say how very much we want to know unity with our girls? I’d bet that connecting hearts with your girl is a high priority for you, just like it is for me.
Whether she is three and you are struggling to teach her to control her behavior or twenty-three and you are watching her navigate the grown-up world or anywhere in between, as moms we want to be connecting hearts with our daughters. We want to walk with them through the seasons of their lives. We want to point them to the One who will never fail them and who loves them beyond anything they can ever fathom.
In January we’ve been praying with our girls (and by the way, WOW! I love all the stories and ways you are sharing how this has been such a great thing for your relationships!). Our focus for these first three months of 2017 here at Prayers for Girls is to encourage and equip you to CONNECT with your daughter. And, praying together for wisdom and direction from Scripture is such an incredible way to do just that!
So, what can we do in February to build on that? How can we deepen our CONNECTION with our daughters? What can we do to increase the unity between us and our girls?
Connecting Hearts with Your Girl
February’s calendar is another PRAYING WITH exercise. We’ll spend 28 days praying with our daughters using verses about our hearts, our desires, and our call to love others.
There are a few reasons why I am convinced this connecting our hearts through the Word is necessary.
- As our hearts are connected through the Word, we are better able to live out the biblical command to spur on the faith of our daughters. (Hebrews 10:24)
- When we make connecting hearts a priority, we are training our daughters to adopt a Kingdom mindset that seeks the interests of others ahead of her own. (Philippians 2:4)
- Training our daughters to seek the heart of God is a powerful way of helping them recognize the value of guarding their emotions and being led by the truth of Scripture. (Proverbs 4:23)
And, in order to help us be intentional about this, I’ve also created a weekly heart challenge for us. You’ll love these practical and easy-to-do ideas for connecting with your daughter.
