Such a hard topic, isn’t it? We want our girls to take care of themselves, to be healthy and have good hygiene, and to learn to dress themselves both appropriately and modestly.
But we don’t want to place too much emphasis on the appearance or their weight because we don’t want to create any potential anxieties, insecurities, or eating disorders.
So what can we do?
A PRAYER FOR UNFADING BEAUTY
One of my favorite passages about beauty is from 1 Peter 3:3-4 —
Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. 4 You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.
That’s what we want for our girls, right? That true beauty that never fades.
The beauty that is less about what’s outside and more about what’s inside. The character of her heart, the gentleness of her soul, the kindness of her — these are the qualities Peter wrote about, the characteristics that don’t fade but instead grow more beautiful as time passes.
A Prayer for Unfading Beauty
Lord, we think our girls are absolutely beautiful from the tops their heads to the tips of their toes. But even more than the beauty that can be seen, we pray our daughters will pursue unfading beauty, the kind that comes from within. May they have quiet and gentle spirits, humble hearts, and compassion for others. Above all, Lord, will you help our daughters (and their moms!) remember that our greatest value and beauty never come from what others see but rather from our identity in you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
