This month our baby girl turns one. I don’t think a year has ever flown by so fast!
My husband and I have marveled at every milestone she has reached. It has been a year of the lows of exhaustion and the highs of every smile and snuggle. When I look at this sweet angel, I can only imagine what she will be like at 5, 10, 15 and beyond. There is nothing like the tender baby years and the mama bear desire to always protect that sweet innocence in your child.
I pray, amongst other things, these 5 things for my daughter:
Kindness — I pray my daughter’s life is marked by kindness. I pray she looks for ways to be a blessing to others and seeks to bring kindness to any situation. Galatians 5:22 says the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and faithfulness, and I can’t think of anything more I’d love to see in my daughter than the fruit of the Holy Spirit at work in her life.
Passion for God’s Word — God’s Word is alive and active in our lives and I pray she has a burning passion for it. God’s Word says blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they will be filled (Matthew 5:6) and I want her to have that unquenchable hunger for God’s Word. Taking God’s Word in her heart and tucking His promises in places she needs them for now and for later will be a blessing for my daughter. I know this because I know how much I have relied on God’s promises throughout my life so far.
Teachable spirit — A mentor told me a long while ago that it doesn’t matter what our education, resources, background is, it’s most important that we have a “yes” in our heart toward the Lord. He is big enough to take care of the details if we are just willing. The Bible says you are foolish if you hate correction (Proverbs 12:1) and I pray she has a willing heart and is teachable to what the Lord teaches her.
Wisdom — Solomon obviously felt wisdom was so important for our lives as he wrote so much about it and I pray for my girl to seek wisdom in every situation. James 1:5 says if we lack wisdom, all we have to do is ask God because He gives it generously.
Love — Jesus said the greatest commandant was to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. I pray my daughter loves the Lord this way. Life is tough and in the world, my girl will face hurts, deal with disappointments, walk through trials and have things to overcome. I pray the overall theme of her life is her love for the Lord.
I read about a mom who traces her daughter’s hand every year and writes a verse on it about something she is praying for her daughter. She just tucks it into her Bible and prays the verse throughout the year. I love that idea and have been praying about a verse to pray over my girl this next year of her life.
What verse are you praying over your daughter?
A Prayer for Our Girls
Lord, we know these precious daughters are the apple of your eye. Would you protect and shield them as they walk through their days? Send friends who are kind and encouraging for them to share life with and give them a passion for your Word that nothing in this world can stop. May they be marked by the fruit of your Spirit and be world changers. Your Word says your plans for them are good and hopeful. Bless and keep them and make your face shine on them. May they always love you more than anything else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
