School is back in session in my neck of the woods. My husband is a teacher and coach, so even though our baby girl is too little to join in, our house definitely feels the flurry of back to school shopping, supply list checking and getting back in the swing of a school schedule.
The start of a new school year is fresh with possibilities because you know the year is going to be full of new friends, memories, field trips and holidays. Of course, there will also be tests and pop quizzes and last minute projects. As moms, we will be juggling a lot. Plus our hearts are stretched as we watch our kids cultivate friendships, stretch their skills and meet goals.
But through our prayers, we can help lay a foundation of faith for the school year as we send our girls out the door.
One of our favorite family traditions is our back to school breakfast. It’s never fancy, usually cinnamon rolls from the store and orange juice in a fancy glass. Honestly, sometimes it’s even eaten as we head out the door instead of around the table. But the effort counts!
Sometimes I have managed to pull some “school” décor from around the house to make it extra special. School takes up so much of our family’s world, so we like to acknowledge and celebrate it with some extra special activities. With a little bit of planning ahead, it creates a sweet memory to start off the school year. Some other ideas include bringing treats to the school office staff, taking a first day treat to the teacher, having a favorite snack after the school day or even a special supper the night before school starts.
Usually, I prepare the breakfast while my husband is getting ready for the day so it is a surprise but it would be fun to make treats for the teacher or school staff with your kids. It makes the start of school a special memory and creates anticipation for all they will be learning that year.
More than a back to school breakfast or treat, praying over our kids’ school year is so important!
Here are 3 verses to pray over the school year as it begins:
“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and he will act.”
Psalm 37:5 (ESV)
“For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
“You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance.”
Psalm 65:11 (NIV)
A Prayer for a New School Year
Father God, we commit this school year into Your hands and ask you to bless our children as they learn new skills this year. Cover each school and fulfill your purpose in each classroom. Bless all teachers and administrators and give them wisdom. Be with each student and may they be a light for You. Thank you for hearing our prayers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
