One of the most powerful encounters I have ever witnessed at the pregnancy center where I work involved two best friends. Both were seniors in high school and were planning what they wanted to wear to prom. But instead of heading out to purchase dresses, they came first to the center because one thought she was pregnant and wanted her best friend as a support.
Tears pooled in the young girl’s eyes as she waited for the results of the pregnancy test. She looked at her friend and said, “Please don’t make the choices I have. I do not want to be in this place right now and don’t know what I’m going to do.” Her friend squeezed her hand and told her, “God is going to work this out for your good. He has a plan. I’m here for you.”
It was amazing to see this devastating situation and how God was working through it. I realized then the power of friends in our lives. The weight of their words, the influence and support they give — all can be life changing. We need to recognize the power our girls' friends have in their lives! And help them choose friends wisely. When I look at my baby girl now, I see how much influence her dad and I have in her world right now. We decide what we do and how we do it and what we want her to discover. We enjoy her so much and love seeing how she views the world. But as she grows, I know friends will come into her life and they will have influence in her life too. Knowing that causes me to pray NOW for my daughter’s friends.
Besides having a relationship with God, these are some types of friends I would like her to have:
Having a friend with wisdom is a gift! Proverbs 12:15 says that the wise listen to advice. I pray our daughter listens to wisdom and doesn’t have to barge down a foolish path.
The world can be an ugly place and having a friend who is a soft spot in the hard, cold world is a treasure. Kindness is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and I pray for kindness for my daughter and her friends.
If you have a friend who brings the party, you know how much fun this adds to any situation. Whether it’s a happy time or sad time, this friend brings joy.
Of course, I have no control over my daughter’s friends, but I am definitely praying for her and her peers now as she grows.

Lord, we pray for our daughters’ friendships. Place friends in her life who love you and pursue a relationship with you. Protect her from hurtful situations and guard her from unwise friend choices. Heal any hurts. If anyone is lonely, encourage them in You. Thank You for hearing our prayers and working on our behalf, even when we can’t see it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
